EDLL 3100 – Language & Literacy With Susan Mark

In this course, we looked at a huge amount of easy ways to incorporate literacy into the classroom and with little funding needed. Simple things like plastic spoons from the dollar store and reused Chinese food containers can be made into activities that school children can use to make words and practice their vocabulary skills. At the end of the course, we had a large assignment due that was composed of having several strategies on display to show how we could incorporate literacy in our classrooms. The big one that I had on display involved Playdoh and small cookie cutters in the shape of letters that kids could punch out and play with to get more familiar with the letters and what they looked like. In the end, this was one of my favorite courses because it really appealed to my artist side. I really took away from it that everyone is different and we all learn in different ways. We also all have different interests and abilities so a teacher needs to be inventive in order to have strategies that will appeal to everyone. Once a student is invested in a topic of interest, they will naturally learn and explore it.
