Professional Standards for British Columbia Teachers Reflection

The Professional Standards for B.C. Educators is a document that outlines the responsibilities that teachers are expected to uphold. As educators, teachers are under scrutiny from the public and with that, are held to a higher standard. We must be aware and cognisant of what we are doing, saying, and appearing within our lives and on social media. We are responsible for the education and care of children and that in of itself, states that we must be responsible and respectful adults. The nine standards are common sense in my opinion including valuing all students, acting ethically, applying knowledge to students so they can grow and develop, family involvement, planning and support, knowledge in the subjects, supporting other educators, and respecting all cultures including Indigenous Ways of Being to work towards reconciliation and healing. Indigenous perspectives should be intertwined into lesson plans where it is possible, and assessment of students should be done in a range of ways to be inclusive to the diverse students within our communities. This set of standards is very important and individuals that cannot follow such commonsense requirements should not be in the profession because it is our job to protect and support students to set them up for success in their futures in the best ways that we can.
